History Of Freemasonry In France

can someone tell me about the history of Freemasonry in France?
That’s VERY complicated- there is more than one kind of Freemasonry in France. The Wikipedia article linked below is pretty accurate. Freemasonry in France started out pretty much like Freemasonry in the rest of the world, but in the 18th century there were big changes. Groups split off from the mainstream Masonic lodges and formed their own- in France women can be Freemasons in some lodges and atheists can join. Around the time of the French Revolution many lodges became very politically oriented and this situation continues to the present.
Most “Mainstream” lodges in the rest of the world do not recognize French organizations such as the Grand Orient as being legitimate Freemasonry and members may not participate in them- which means that if I attended an unrecognized French lodge I could be censured by the Grand Lodge of my home state.
